Google’s smart display lineup today starts at $99.99 for the Nest Hub with Soli radar for sleep tracking and air gestures.
This lets you pause and play music and videos by simply raising your hand to the camera, meaning there's no need to use your voice or physically touch the display - great for when you're cooking. It's a great convenience feature that we used much more than we initially expected. We'd love to see more controls added in the future, such as swiping your hand to skip a track, or the ability to answer a Duo call. But until the Nest Hub Max, there were a couple of differences between Google's own smart display and third-party devices, in that the rivals devices offered built-in cameras.
Google leaks Nest Hub Max release date, but still a while to go
$5 / £4 a month keeps a 5-day cloud store of these recorded clips, $10 / £8 offers a 10-day archive and $30 / £24 a month stores clips for a full month. Setup is very similar to that of any Google Assistant speaker. You install Google Home on your phone, agree to a small army of terms and conditions screens, and you’re done. You can avoid this partially by using Chromecast, Google’s content streaming standard. The Google Nest Hub Max does show up in the Spotify app as a connected speaker, though. Of course, compare the Google Nest Hub Max’s speaker part to the iPad Pro or Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 and it doesn’t seem as glossy.

Google also said that all of the face-recognition is done only on the device. With two 18mm, 10W tweeters and one 75mm, 30W woofer, the Max can put out a lot of sound for its size. Even at half volume, it easily filled my kitchen with quality audio.

It connects and controls your Google Home and other Matter-enabled devices, so your smart home is faster to set up, and more responsive and reliable than ever. The Nest Hub Max differs from the Home Hub thanks to its larger, 10-inch display (the Home Hub had a 7-inch screen), front-facing camera, security camera functionality, and better speakers. Ron Amadeo of Ars Technica praised Google Home's setup process and its ability to pick up voice commands even from a distance, calling the latter "absolutely incredible". In the app, a setting allows the user to teach Google Assistant their voice. The Google voice technology can be used in digital forensics, where the words "OK, Google" are capable of unlocking mobile locks. A mobile device can be found, unlocked, and data can be extracted through the use of a suspect's voice file. Some features of Nest devices require the voice to be verified as to determine if the user is the owner. The device can also tell if it is connected to other smart devices, which can find stored data.

The Nest Hub Max delivers great volume and it certainly sounds rich enough for music listening in the background - the sort of thing you'd do while cooking. At the higher volumes, it is quite bassy and vocals are drowned out, so it doesn't offer the same quality sound experience as the Sonos One, for example, but it is significantly superior to the smaller Nest Hub. The built-in camera on the Nest Hub Max doesn't offer familiar face detection, like the Nest Cam IQ, but it is capable of distinguishing between a person and an animal, for example. It also doesn't have night vision capabilities like the Nest Cam IQ so if you want it to monitor you home during the night, you'll need to leave a light on. The camera on the Nest Hub Max is smart, so when you're in a call, it focuses on the action and zooms in to make sure you're in the frame. It's meant that when on a video call to our partner or a group video call with our friends, we could move around our kitchen and the camera would track and follow.
Like the smaller model, physical volume controls and a physical privacy switch are both present on the rear, and the privacy switch will disable both the microphone and the camera on the Nest Hub Max. We'd rather it was a physical privacy shutter like on the Lenovo Smart Display, for added piece of mind. Jill Duffy is a writer covering technology and personal productivity. We had some trouble with this side of the Google Nest Hub Max. While it recorded clips, the app consistently said the camera was “offline” when we tried to have a peek at the live view. We were also unable to access the camera directly, from the touchscreen.
Schedule your cameras to turn on and your doors to automatically lock at sunset. The totally redesigned app has a new five-tab layout that’s easier to navigate. Pin your favorite devices to your home view to see multiple camera live streams right when you open the app.
Android TV and Google TV are great options for streaming media, playing cloud-based games, or even turning your TV into a virtual fireplace. But did you know that you can use your phone as a remote control for your Android TV/Google TV? Did something happen and you need to download the video your Nest Camera captured?
The Hub Max lets users make video calls, but it exclusively supports Google Duo. That means both parties need to have the or it simply won’t work. The large display makes it ideal for things like YouTube videoswhile cooking a lasagne, streaming your Arlo Baby camera, or using the device as a digital photo frame. Talking about privacy, Google made sure to note that the Hub Max’s camera and microphone can be powered off at the switch of a button. Previously, the company made it a point to not include a camera on the original Nest Hub to make users feel comfortable around the device. Now, with the addition of a camera Google has added a kill switch.
