This primitive style of building originally consisted of modest one-room homes in the wilderness. Nowadays, people build modern cabins as their primary residence in rural and even suburban settings for the aesthetic. The exterior still often is formed with logs, or it is at least clad in wood as a nod to the original style. And the shape is simple, usually with a fairly open interior. Farmhouse-style homes have barn-shaped roofs while others aren’t as on the nose.
But the style is still an iconic example of architecture that originated in America. Ranch-style houses appeared in the 1930s, but their popularity boomed in the 1950s. These homes are typically one story and feature low-pitched roofs, large windows, sliding glass doors, large backyards, open living spaces and attached garages. There isn’t a particular house style that applies to all homes. Some houses may have a combination of two or more house styles. WHY FIRSTYLE?
It’s hard to pick a favorite because design is so subjective. It’s one of the most easily recognizable house styles because of the interesting half-timber wood framing across the house, forming intersections and designs that resemble geometric patterns. Gothic Revival homes always feature distinctive arched Gothic windows, opulent wood details around the roof, doors, and windows, and highly-pitched, cross-gabled roofs. Craftsman style homes are popular across the United States.
True to the namesake, the Shingle style home is easily identified today by the huge abundance of shingle roofing applied over the entire top of the home as well as the siding in many cases.
